Final Assignment – Group Project

The current reality that we are all sharing with COVID19 and the shifts that we have seen in learning, work, and communication.

The traditional school model was overturned due to the pandemic forcing millions of students and teachers across the world to make the shift to and familiarize themselves with home learning. However, with this shift to online learning we have seen growth towards a more personalized digital education environment that puts more educational tools into the hands of both students and teachers (Personalized Learning in a Post-Covid-19 World, 2021). Now that we are past the worst of the school closures within Canada we are still seeing most educational courses be offered in a hybrid style accounting for both face-to-face and remote learning environments as we now have the infrastructure put in place for that to be a reality. This shift from brick-and-mortar schooling to a hybrid environment has made education more accessible today than prior to the pandemic. We also saw a similar shift in the work environment going from working entirely remotely to many employers now offering a hybrid work from home/go into the office form of employment. There is no perceivable downside with having employees work from home partially as any tasks that need to be dealt with in-person (e.g., onboarding new employees) can be handled with going into the office periodically when needed. Statistical evidence has also shown that about 25 percent of employees in advanced economies are able to work from home anywhere from 3-5 days a week without any perceived loss in productivity (Lund et al., 2021). In terms of communication the most obvious shift has been that there is now less face-to-face communication occurring with the trade-off of that being a significant increase in communicating over online platforms such as Zoom and Skype. As a result, this has led to most individuals becoming more adept at utilising these communication technologies and in turn has opened the door for many to creating digital PLNs as a result.

Features & Characteristics of Existing Media Technologies

The availability and immediacy of information is one of the most prominent advantages of media technologies. It has changed the way we consume and learn new information as we can easily satisfy our curiosity by searching for content on Youtube or reaching out to experts/professionals via Twitter/LinkedIn. For example, Youtube channels such as ā€œThe Organic Chemistry Tutorā€ or ā€œKhan Academyā€ can be accessed by students at any time and from anywhere to provide clarity on confusing lecture material and allow for self-directed learning. Another valuable characteristic of media technologies is their ability to enhance communication and collaboration between different users. Social media users on Twitter can expand their social network and learn new perspectives on global issues by utilizing hashtags. This not only allows for users to be introduced to new perspectives but also provides them the opportunity to be challenged on their own views. LinkedIn, for example, also nurtures collaboration and communication as it connects users to professionals, experts, and research/job opportunities. Media technologies have fundamentally changed the way people can communicate and learn from one another through the use of social media platforms. As these platforms allow for an individual to tailor their PLN to align with their own interests, online learning has become more ā€œself-motivated, autonomous, and informalā€ when compared to more traditional approaches (Baran, 2019).

Building Reputation and Presence in Social Media Platforms

To build a good reputation/presence using a social media platform, there are some steps that must be established. In her article ā€œImprove Your Digital Reputation With Social Media and Contentā€, Director of Marketing & Communications at WSI, Cheryl Baldwin outlines the steps to use social media in order to build a good reputation/presence. The first of which is choosing the appropriate platform. Nowadays, there are so many social media platforms that users can choose to establish their platform. As mentioned by Cheryl, some platforms will be more beneficial than others, depending on the industry and audience. An example of this is if the industry and audience are young athletes, then Instagram is a better platform for this purpose than LinkedIn.The next step is to interact with followers frequently. Posting frequently and commenting opens the door for discussions and building professional relationships with others which in return builds oneā€™s reputation and presence. It is important however, that the shared content shows quality and is of value to the audience. Finally, publishing diversity is important to building the intended presence and reputation. According to Cheryl, getting content published outside of oneā€™s personal platform is helpful in allowing the individual to gain more exposure. This can be established through networking with others and asking if they can share oneā€™s posts.

Social media platforms are very important in building oneā€™s reputation/presence both in the online and real world. Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook are a great way of building a reputation/presence online. A good example of this is guest Markiel Simpson, a young activist looking to end systematic racism, especially that has been affecting the BC black community. Markiel, being a black man with a disability, used Twitter to share his perspective and ideologies on issues affecting the black community in the area. By sharing posts, and his opinion on these matters via Twitter, Markiel was able to gain a large young audience. Through sharing his opinion and his work in the community (volunteering, speeches, etc.), his fanbase kept increasing and gaining him a reputation and presence both online and in the real world allowing him to use that following in the future to vie for the federal NDP nomination in the riding of Burnaby North-Seymour,

When is a PLN a success?

To find out whether a PLN is successful or not, it is important to look at the definition of a PLN. A personal learning network is an informal learning network made up of  people who interact with each other for the purpose of gaining some sort of knowledge or skills. A PLN has the specific intent that one person establishes a connection with another and some  learning takes place as a result of that connection (Wikimedia Foundation, 2020). As defined above the main goal of a PLN is learning through the interactions with others in oneā€™s PLN. Therefore, it is evident that when one is constantly learning from their PLN that it is critical to determining success. If a person is able to learn constantly through their learning network that shows the success of a PLN. Another factor that shows a PLN is successful is when a person finds that theyā€™ve developed themselves professionally with a network that caters to their needs. This allows for individuals to build their professional portfolio and opens up opportunities to advance in their careers. Any advancement in a career because of a PLN is a sign of a successful PLN.

Social Considerations to Account for in your PLN

A major social consideration that should be accounted for in your PLN is the overall diversity and inclusiveness of your network as that allows for you to gain an understanding of the different beliefs and opinions of others. This in turn broadens your existing knowledge by giving you a fresh perspective on how others view a topic comparatively to your own thoughts on the subject. In keepiā€‹ā€‹ng a diverse PLN you are also adhering to principles of inclusiveness by fostering an environment where all individuals feel comfortable sharing their unique experiences when continuing a discussion or in bringing up new topics for discussion within your PLN.

Another consideration that should be at the forefront of your mind is to be very conscious of what you choose to share and post across your PLN as the information you put out in the open is liable to receive criticism from every angle. As such, you should be somewhat cautious and screen whatever you end up posting, sharing, etc. to be certain that you are presenting yourself in a positive light. This is not to say that you should censor your thoughts on a matter but rather choose the right medium in which to express those thoughts (i.e., keeping posts professional when interacting with others over a business centered PLN).

Once your PLN has begun to grow, a social consideration that you have to make is how invested you want to be in your PLN and what kind of role you are trying to fill within that PLN. This has more to do with what your end goals are with your PLN. Are you strictly using it as a resource in educating yourself by interacting with mentors you have networked with, or you can take on the role of a potential mentor and share your own ideas, beliefs, and practices with others (Gray, 2019). You are not limited to one of the two as you can choose to learn from others while also sharing the knowledge youā€™ve gathered up to that point, essentially your PLN is as effective as you make it within that spectrum. As a side note to that the more time you spend interacting with others in your PLN directly leads to a stronger relationship forming with those individuals building up to more personal and long-lived relationships forming.

How does Data Tracking Benefit a PLN?

Social Media companies are able to parse through all of a user’s posting history in order to turn that information into behavioural, preference and demographic data about each unique user. This data is collected from things you post, comment on or search about through a device with internet functionalities. This data is used to generate a persona centered around you that can be used in targeting and curating your social media platform to better suit your needs. A specific example of this would be how in the terms and agreements for creating a new user account on these social media platforms more often than not you give permissions for these companies to access your phone and email contacts. This information is then later used to find similar users on the site that you may know which helps you when initially starting to grow your network. Another way these sites help you grow your network is through collecting your location data through your devices, by doing this they are able to bring to your attention different stores/vendors in your immediate area that you may be inclined to meet leading to newfound connections made as a result (Emerging Media, n.d.).

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Privacy, Security and Acceptable Use Policies for  Social Media Platforms

There are a lot of strengths and weaknesses of the privacy, security and acceptable use policies for social media platforms. One of the biggest strengths with the acceptable use of social media is asking questions and receiving real-time information. Social media allows us to ask questions or debate a topic with anyone we know (be it any influential people or any organizations). As an organization, such platforms help them to understand their productā€™s pros and cons and also popular feedback on how to improve it. And the biggest benefit is that all of the information will be in real-time and as quickly as they want. We can build a huge PLN by taking the right measures and using social media how itā€™s meant to be used. Anybody can communicate with anyone on the globe just through a phone or laptop and that has a lot of possibilities and opportunities for everyone to grow their network.

Along with so many benefits, there comes many risks as well. There are lots of privacy and security concerns regarding the use of social media platforms. When anybody posts anything on a social media platform, their digital identity gets linked to the post and stays on there forever – Social media makes it difficult to entirely remove anyoneā€™s digital identity. Moreover, there are lots of cases concerning cyberbullying which could be taken into account here where an individual can be threatened or bullied online and that could have serious consequences. However, the good news is all the big tech companies are currently working on their products to improve the privacy of their social media platforms. This is very crucial for the continuing the usage of their platforms. No one would feel safe to post anything online if they are threatened that their data could be stolen or used in a malicious way. Privacy and Security issues go hand in hand when we talk about social media platforms. There have been a lot of cyber attacks on the web platforms trying to steal usersā€™ data and many have been successful in it as well. There is another great threat to social media where it can be used to endanger politicians or people in power that would ruin a countryā€™s unity and harmony in the bigger picture.

Leaders who have used their PLNā€™s for Growth

The selected field of interest is Software Industry. Elon Musk is a great example of a leader in software who has grown his network in the community and used his PLN to become an influential leader in electric cars. We can clearly see his contributions and ideas in his Twitter account (https://twitter.com/elonmusk). He has always been very active on social platforms to let his network and now the world become aware of the ideas and thoughts about his company, world issues, or any other concerning issues. Another very influential leader in the software industry is Bill Gates. He has revolutionized computers and the whole software industry with Microsoft Products. I believe this couldnā€™t have been possible without a vast PLN he has on social platforms. When he was the CEO of Microsoft, the mission of the company was ā€œA computer on every desk and in every home.ā€  This is certainly not possible without the help of a strong and diverse network which Bill Gates has built online (https://twitter.com/billgates). I strongly believe any leader needs a PLN to tell their story and influence others in their field to help the world in new ways.

Blog 9 – Engaging your PLN

Talk about the guest and their steps in building a podcast relying on a PLN.

Mo Amir began his podcast as a hobby and had no prior skillset in using social media platforms (Twitter and LinkedIn) and had started his podcast and gained a following through his real-world connections and related networking opportunities within Vancouver. After picking up speed he started posting more on Twitter and stayed true to who he was through his posts and from there his podcast really began to take-off as he was able to reach online communities that he had once been closed off to. This ties into the concept of connectivism as the ability to reach new groups over twitter helped to further establish Mo Amirā€™s podcast and help to build his following.

Can your PLN be used to help professional development post-course? If yes, how? If no, what limitations exist?

Yes, my PLN can help me further my professional development post-course by helping keep me up to date with the various advances in healthcare and healthcare technologies that are at the center of Health Informatics. By following leaders in this field, Iā€™m able to keep my knowledge regarding health technologies current. Iā€™m also able to sit in on online seminars with guest speakers and learn new things based off of their personal experiences of working in healthcare and health informatics.

Can your PLN be relied on to open professional opportunities?

My PLN has opened the door to new career opportunities. Iā€™ve already established a diverse PLN on LinkedIn and am able to use that network to find new jobs or internships at various health authorities by giving me the means to contact and be reached easily by hiring managers. Over time as I gain new connections and further build my network my PLN will become that much more reliable in keeping myself open to new professional opportunities.

Blog 8 – Media Literacy (assessment blog)

What is media literacy?

Having media literacy is to have the capability to recognize and understand the content in messages across various multimedia platforms. This also has to do with choosing the right multimedia medium in delivering an impact to an intended audience (i.e., using PowerPoint in a business pitch meeting to convey your message).

Why is it important?

Media literacy is important because it enables individuals to navigate through the overwhelming amount of information that is being presented and locate what sources are reliable and can be trusted. This is a skill that everyone should have in order to stop different forms of misinformation from proliferating across the public.

Why is it dismissed?

Media literacy may be dismissed due to personal biases as many people tend to gravitate towards sources of information that align with their own thoughts for that feeling of self-gratification that comes with being ā€˜rightā€™. Individuals may also dismiss media literacy because they may view it as being unnecessary because of their current inability to distinguish between reliable and unreliable forms of information. Essentially they canā€™t recognize itā€™s importance because they havenā€™t been properly educated on the matter.

Why should you aim for varied views but the factual consensus in your PLN?

Itā€™s important to maintain a factual consensus in your PLN because the goal of a PLN is not to argue what is and isnā€™t true but have meaningful discussions around what is true/what makes something true. You should aim for varied views as well because the truth can look different through others perspectives and in order to get the full picture you have to consider otherā€™s views on a matter.

Blog 7 – Themes of a PLN

Explore the video provided and reflect on the themes of a PLN in a professional capacity.

Brad Baker goes into detail on the many ways a PLN can be utilized in a professional capacity to your own benefit. I found that the most important aspect he mentioned was how your PLN acts a support system for you to further your own well-being if you engage in healthy, respectful dialogue with your peers. A PLN gives you access to an outlet where you are able to express yourself and get your opinions across to people who will actually take the time to digest what you are saying and engage with you in a respectful discussion. That being said there is also room for criticisms within that dialogue as your PLN should challenge you to a degree so that you are able to benefit by actively learning from those in your network.

Which social media platforms are beneficial in education?

Personally, I would say that social media platforms such as YouTube, Twitter, and Google are beneficial in education. Many classrooms utilize twitter to connect with students/parents outside of the classroom through posting reminders and having class discussions through the platform. YouTube can provide great supplementary lessons for students as there is a wealth of knowledge that is made available to teachers and students. Prevalent YouTube channels that have helped me in my studies are ā€œThe Organic Chemistry Tutorā€ and ā€œKhan Academyā€ which have helped me in areas where I may need some extra guidance or clarification on a specific topic. Google classroom in particular is a great resource for teachers in lesson planning and delivering educational materials for students as it allows for easy access to those materials at any time as everything is hosted online and is cloud based (integrated with Google Drive).

Consider the equality that exists when all have the same platform to engage community dialogues.

When everyone has access to the same platform it results in there being equal opportunity across the board for participation in discussions, access to educational materials, and other educational/professional opportunities. It also facilitates the sharing of discussions as well as there are those who may be afraid/less-inclined to speak their minds in a classroom setting and may be more comfortable with contributing in an open-forum environment for example.

Blog 6 – Diverse and Inclusive PLN

What are the benefits of a diverse and inclusive PLN in social media sharing that understands where you are coming from with messaging that impacts the community?

Having a diverse and inclusive PLN lets you gain perspective on the different perspectives, beliefs, and opinions of individuals within your community. This allows for you to gauge the needs of your community and help to inform your decisions on what to post/message, leading to an overall positive impact on the community. A diverse and inclusive PLN is also a direct reflection on your character based on who you choose to surround yourself with, this creates an opportunity to speak up for individuals who may have otherwise felt uncomfortable doing so due to keeping an inclusive mindset.

Markiel Simpson was able to leverage their network into a campaign for the NDP nomination in the Burnaby North-Seymour riding. Through sharing his unique life experiences and ideologies that stem from his upbringing and life experience on social platforms like Twitter he amassed a following of individuals who resonated with the information he was sharing. By doing this in an authentic manner he was able to establish a diverse and inclusive PLN and use that as a jumping off point for his campaign by establishing himself as a voice for the underrepresented in our communities.

Blog 5 – Benefits and Restrictions of having a Public PLN

Identify the risks and benefits of engaging with a public audience in a media space. What are the risks for a public figure or person in a position of trust (educator, lawyer, government official)?

The benefits of engaging with a public audience in a media space are numerous, Jody Vance goes on to say that this allows for connections to grow with your audience as openness leads to an increase in mutual understanding. This also opens the door for support from your audience as well as helping you to establish new professional contacts, growing your future opportunities that are made available. The risks associated with this is that you have to be very conscious of what you post as whatever information you choose to share is open to criticism from every angle and as such you should screen your posts to make certain you do not place yourself in a compromising position. If you donā€™t take measures in screening what you post and youā€™re a public figure/person in a position of trust you risk losing credibility and thereā€™s also the possibility of souring your public image (e.g., when celebrities get ā€˜cancelledā€™ for off-color tweets that get brought up from the past).

How to best address negative replies and critiques reflective of your personal values and employer social media policy?

I feel that the best way to address negativity and criticism directed at your posts is to not respond as in most cases the reason for ā€˜pushbackā€™ on your posts/online activity is to get a reaction out of you. Similar to how paparazzi act as instigators towards celebrities in order to get a reaction out of them for the shock-value headlines. However, it is a good practice to be aware of critiques that are more substantial and are made in good faith as they are opportunities for growth. If you shut out all forms of criticism you remove any opportunity for growth in your page and end up creating an echo-chamber where you only hear what you want to hear.

How do notable individuals use social media?

Notable individuals use social media for growing their own personal brands, an example of this would be any professional athlete. If you have a large following on a social media platform like Instagram itā€™s much easier to get a paid sponsorship from a notable sport affiliated brand (i.e., Nike, Adidas, Puma, etc.) as a form of supplemental income. Public/Government officials and celebrities use social media for promotional purposes as well as public outreach in bringing awareness to prevalent social issues that affect the general public.

What are the benefits of being the public eye and having a PLN?

The main benefit of being in the public eye and having a PLN is that it offers you many more opportunities to grow your PLN through contacts made from the public interacting with your online activities. You would also be in a better position to raise awareness for issues/topics that are important to you as it would be much easier to reach out to the public.

Building community with online tools provided by the employer can be limiting, what are the perceived restrictions and benefits?

The biggest restriction associated with using online tools provided by an employer is that there is no semblance of privacy as all of your activities using these provided tools can be easily monitored. This results in individuals placing self-imposed censors on what they choose to share, stopping them from saying what they really feel. This stifles creativity in the workplace and can result in ideas being regurgitated as they would fit the established status quo. A benefit of using online tools provided by an employer is that there is no extra work needed to grow a community as you are folded into the existing workplace community, this makes interoffice communications and idea sharing more streamlined/ideal.

Delivering information in a connected society requires verifiable resources, how to build a PLN to rely on?

In order to build a PLN with information you can rely on you have to first be proactive in fact checking any posts and statements you make so that you donā€™t end up making a blanket generalization that is inaccurate or rooted in bias/prejudice. Essentially just be sure that the information that you are sharing has a reliable source otherwise it may be damaging to your image and your PLN (i.e., lead by example).

How do those, who are veteran storytellers, minimize risk in sharing misinformation?

They are able to minimize risk through verifying the information they share with primary sources (first-hand accounts) to ensure that there is no ā€˜watering-downā€™ of the truth.

Blog Post 4 – PLN and Social Media Campaign

How would you create a PLN prior to engaging a social media campaign on a topic of your choice? Choose a topic, consider your audiences, and consider how you would create a social media campaign leaving your PLN.Ā

My topic of choice would have to be a fitness/nutrition centered social media campaign. Prior to launching the social media campaign, I would place my focus on creating a social media presence tailored to fitness on Instagram and/or TikTok by interacting with similar content creators through community engagement on their posts by leaving likes and comments. I feel that these platforms would be best suited for fitness/nutrition content as there are already many established ‘influencers’ who have tailored their online presence around this topic. That way Iā€™m able to see what content is already prevalent within the community and figure out what niche my page would satisfy and tailor my page accordingly. I’d also grow my network through reaching out to similar content creators and sharing their posts and leaving comments on what catches my interest. After curating my online presence on these social media platforms, I would then begin posting content at a scheduled time (i.e., a set number of posts a week, somewhere between 3-5) in order to maintain community engagement rather than drop 20 posts in a day and repeat that once a month. This would help keep in keeping my page relevant over time and hopefully as a result grow my page.

Blog Post 3 – My PLN and Inclusion

  • How diverse is your existing PLN?

My existing PLN is diverse in how I utilize each social media platform to fit a specific need, either professional or more personal in nature. I keep my personal social media accounts (Instagram, etc.) private and use it primarily to connect with friends and family. I also use these accounts to explore other areas of interest that donā€™t necessarily  translate over to my professional/educational goals. The accounts I do use in a professional/educational context (i.e., LinkedIn) are used to connect with classmates, professors, and past co-workers/supervisors.

  • In your PLN, are you learning from a variety of voices or are you the loudest in the room?

In the context of my PLN, I would say that Iā€™m learning from a variety of voices as Iā€™d rather filter through everyoneā€™s thoughts on a specific matter before reaching any conclusions myself. This is primarily the case for my professional accounts as Iā€™m still within the context of a student/learner in my field of study/career.

  • Do you participate in a silo of information sharing (similar themes or wide range of interests)?

Iā€™d say for the most part I do participate in a silo of information sharing but in a slightly limited context, Iā€™m not posting/sharing much of anything and mainly read or comment on what others share and/or post.

  • How can you use a diverse PLN to broaden your views of inclusion?

A diverse PLN is helpful in broadening your views of inclusion as it means that you have more opportunities to connect with and understand others unique perspectives on situations

  • In your professional setting of choice, do you think inclusion is actively embraced?

My professional setting of choice as a HINF major would be a healthcare organization (ex/Island Health). Based off my previous co-op placements in this field I believe that inclusion is actively embraced as inclusion is a key factor in delivering healthcare across the province and country. Inclusion is also prevalent in the workforce in how we were trained prior to starting employment.

  • What is the learning outcome of your PLN and how are you ensuring your exposure to diversity and inclusion?

Iā€™d say the learning outcome of my PLN would be to further add to my existing knowledge in relation to my field (Healthcare) and learn skills that would apply in the context of a career as a Health Informatician. Iā€™m ensuring my exposure to diversity and inclusion by engaging with a variety of different pages and accounts on LinkedIn, this allows me to keep up to date with what is happening in the field as well as make new connections with other professionals who come from a variety of different backgrounds.

  • How has your thinking about inclusion and PLN evolved after reviewing the videos and readings?

After reviewing the videos and readings my understanding about inclusion and PLN has become more rounded as Iā€™ve learned that inclusion and diversity is beneficial for all involved parties as you are able to learn from otherā€™s unique experiences and apply that knowledge to your own work.

Professional Learning Network + V&R Map – Blog Post 2

Figure 1. My Personal V&R map detailing current usage of the included online applications

What digital platforms are students currently using to develop their professional network?

If you are looking to strictly build your professional network platforms such as LinkedIn are a great resource as it is strictly geared towards being a more business-oriented application where potential job opportunities are abundant. Other social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter can also be used to build your professional network as it allows for you to have a platform where you can promote yourself.

What could the student consider in expanding their professional learning network?

The biggest factor to consider when expanding your professional learning network is how active you are on professional platforms such as LinkedIn. Engaging with an online community through commenting, sharing posts, etc. allows for the opportunity to make new connections through community engagement.

In your network how can you create a digital identity/reputation?

Your digital identity or reputation is formed by your collective activity across social media/professional platform accounts. This is why most people curate their online presence to appear more professional or just keep separate professional and personal accounts as the content of what they post always has the possibility of coming under scrutiny by prospective employers.

Find out what a local employer would do if you applied for a job with them?

If I had applied for a job with a local employer they would most likely run an online search to screen for my online presence (i.e., a background check). They would come across my LinkedIn page which contains all of my relevant professional information. All of my other online accounts would stay hidden in a regular cursory search as Iā€™ve set my privacy settings accordingly

Blog 1 – Personal Learning Networks and Digital Identity (Assessment Blog)

What does it mean to network using social media?

To network using social media is to essentially take advantage of the open communication platforms provided to us by companies such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. to form meaningful connections with other individuals. By using these social media platforms, you can effectively expand your contacts in both your professional and personal life to anyone around the globe as the internet removes any geographic barriers, etc. that would have otherwise prevented communication (Gutierrez, n.d.).

How are we motivated to participate in networked publics?

Rajagopal, Brinke, Bruggen, and Sloep (2012) suggest various motivations that push consumers to participate in networked publics. The concepts raised in the article which I strongly agree with is that we are motivated to participate due to a real potential for learning being made available and through trying to connect with like-minded individuals. Both of these motivators are fueled by your own desire to learn and have open discussions regarding a topic of interest, and I believe that there is no stronger motivation than one stemming from self-improvement in some form.

What are the risks & rewards of public communications?

The reward of engaging in public communications is the accessibility of knowledge through discussion with other individuals and the speed at which information can be accessed and shared through public forums, social media platforms, etc. A definite risk of engaging in these platforms is that you may find yourself stuck in an echo chamber as you join online communities which may perpetuate the same ideas over and over again with no new knowledge being disseminated.

What is a digital identity?

Your Digital Identity or Footprint consists of any and all data found online which can be linked to your personal use. This is an umbrella term which covers any and all information found within your social media accounts as well as your browsing history which has been saved on other websites youā€™ve visited (i.e., search engine history).

How do personal versus professional approaches to digital identity affect social media use?

If your social media usage is strictly personal you may not be deterred to post your opinions and share your own thoughts regarding topics of interest if they fall outside of the accepted social norm. However, if you approach social media from a professional standpoint you may be more reserved in how/what you post as many companies now take measures to scrub for social media accounts before making a hiring decision. As such your social media engagement/posts run the risk of souring any potential job opportunity if your online presence does not fit within the companyā€™s image.

How do digital identities converge in networked publics ā€“ what are the impacts and/or benefits?

Your Digital Identity converges in networked publics as your online presence can be found and utilised by introducing you to online communities based off your browsing history and other common interests found in your online presence. The benefit of this is that it makes these communities where youā€™re able to have meaningful discussions on far easier for you to find due to this ā€œtargeted advertisingā€ for lack of a better word.
